OnePlus will launch one of the first 5G phone in Europe and for less than $1000

OnePlus will be among the first to use Qualcomm’s new flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 855. But more importantly, they will be the first company to release a 5G smartphone in Europe sometime in the first half of 2019. However, expect the phone to be priced higher than what you would expect from OnePlus. As reported by Engadged , OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau said that 5G smartphones will be $200 to $300 more expensive, but they will still try to position their next flagship below the psychological mark of $100.

If we take current prices for a OnePlus phone into consideration, their next phone that will come with a 5G option will be around $800-$850. Still not bad if we compare them to other brands where flagships can easily surpass $1000 even without 5G on board, but specifically more expensive than what we are used to receiving from the Chinese company.

Why will 5G phone be that more expensive than 4G phones? First of all, because it is new technology and everytime something new is released the price is way above standard pricing. But there is also licensing costs involved for the new technology that is currently higher than for 4G modems. Also, 5G poses some technical difficulties due to mm-waves and making a phone (and the associated infrastructure for that matter) poses a challenge. The price will certainly go down in a couple of years as the research costs get covered and companies gather more experience on building a phone with 5G on board.
