Vivo Apex 2019: in-display fingerprint reader, no holes or buttons, no selfie camera

As promised, Vivo revealed today the new Vivo Apex 2019 smartphone. We had very little information related to this device, but we knew that it won’t have any holes and no buttons. Today however we have all the information available about this device and we gotta say, some compromises were made to get this design out, but from a performance point of view, it is a beast.

So let’s get everything out of the way in terms of compromises. The Vivo Apex 2019 has no holes. This means no charging port, no buttons, no speaker, no SIM slot. Charging is done thought a magnetic charger, the sound is transmitted through the display and all other connectivity options rely on Bluetooth 5. The device also has no physical buttons, instead relying on capacitive buttons with haptic feedback placed on the side of the phone. On the front the phone is all-screen. Bezels are slim on all sides and there is no notch or hole. In fact, there is no front facing camera at all. For selfies you can use the glossy/reflective back of the phone but the Vivo Apex 2019 won’t be a phone for people that use video chat applications.

Now that we god this out of the way, let’s move over to specs. The device has everything you could wish for in terms of internal components. You get the new Snapdragon 855 CPU and up to 12GB of RAM. The amount of RAM is an overkill from my point of view, but the entire device is more of a statement than a commercial-viable product. The Vivo Apex 2019 will also have up to 512GB of internal storage. This is also a 5G enabled smartphone, but don’t expect it on shelfs. The Vivo Nex 2019 is a prototype and a peak of what will come from the company. If you remember, the original Vivo Apex was a prototype of the later on Vivo Nex.

The screen is also interesting on this device. You get a 6.34″ AMOLED screen with 2340 x 1080 resolution and an in-display fingerprint reader. However, unlike other smartphones that have such readers, this one has a scanning area that cover the entire display. On the back you also get a dual-camera setup having a 12MP and a 13MP camera. No other details were given related to battery size, OS version or when we can expect such devices to hit the market.
