Elephone has been teasing the Elephone U2 for a while. They even had the Elephone PX, a smartphone launched on IndieGoGo a few months ago, that had a similar pop-up camera. Today the company finally announced that their next device is close to release. The smartphone builds on the PX but offers better specs on all fronts as well as a better design, but it will probably be sold for a higher price than the PX, even though the price was not released yet.
The Elephone U2 will adopt the Mediatek helio P70 chipset. This is the latest available CPU from Mediatek and comes with an octa-core configuration on a 12nm lithography. It also has dedicated AI cores for better image processing during photo shoots and other AI-related tasks. The U2 will come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The main attraction of the device is the screen. Even though it does not come with an AMOLED display, there are no notches and the 6.26″ FullHD+ screen covers 93.1% of the entire front of the device. There is one small chin on the bottom that measures just 3.48mm.
On the back of the smartphone, you will find 3 cameras. Sadly, Elephone did not put a 48MP sensor. Instead, the Elephone U2 comes with a 16MP main sensor, a secondary depth-sensing 5MP camera and a third one used for light enhancing that has a 2MP sensor. There is no wide-angle camera here and no optical zoom either, but the phone should take decent photos. The selfie camera is housed inside a pop-out mechanism that is rated for at least 300.000 open and close events. It holds a 16MP sensor that should take really good selfies, especially since it is enhanced by the on-board AI chip.
When it comes to connectivity, the Elephone U2 ticks all the boxes. It has a dual-4G SIM slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. NFC is not yet confirmed, but many other smartphones with this chipset have NFC as well, so we expect that the U2 will also have it. Android 9.0 is offered out of the box for the device. Elephone U2 is also quite elegant with a really good design and Elephone promises the best materials for the case. It will be available in Black, Red, and Blue colors. We will keep you posted on official pricing and stores that have it in stock as soon as it will become available. A “Pro” version is apparently in the works as well that may come with an AMOLED screen and Snapdragon CPU.
