Oppo and Huawei already have smartphones that offer true optical zoom thanks to a periscope camera setup that moves the sensor and lens to achieve greater zoom without loss of quality. Xiaomi, so far, does not. Things may change in the near future if we are to believe a recent patent submitted by the company and discovered by GSMArena. In the diagrams from the State Intellectual Property Office of China that were submitted on the 2nd of July, we can see details related to the inner workings of the system. The diagrms and the associated text describe a telephoto camera with at least one periscope lens that is placed perpendicular to the main one.
The result is lossless zoom with optical image stabilization, however, we don’t know what focal length such a system will have. We also don’t have any indication on when such a system will be available on the market but rumors say that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone may have a 64MP camera with a periscope lens on the back.
