Xiaomi’s expansion in Europe is not limited to importing and selling their smartphones there. The company, even though it is a Chinese one with a rather long tradition, is expanding with research tasks outside of their home country. The company registered a new research and development center in Tampere, Finland where it plans to focus on camera performance and better photography for their devices. The competition for this field greatly increased in the last few years, especially for the Finish city.
The location is not arbitrary. Nokia has had a camera-focused R&D center in that area for a few years and Huawei opened a similar one in 2016. Xiaomi already started to hire a few of Nokia’s engineering for its staff and has also started to collaborate with Leica. Huawei’s collaboration with Leica proved very successful and Xiaomi hopes it will also help them. Xiaomi also had partnerships with Nokia and the recent expansion may also be a part of their on-going collaboration.
