Umidigi X is the cheapest smartphone with in-display fingerprint reader

Today Umidigi unveiled a new smartphone, device that has been teased for quite a while now. The company tried to stand out of the budget smartphone crowd by offering an in-display fingerprint reader and an AMOLED screen. The did manage to offer these, however, the final specs are not that impressive, especially considering the price of the Umidigi X.

The smartphone comes with a previous-gen MediaTek Helio P60 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Internal storage is quite big, at 128GB, which should give you enough space for your photos and video, plus a combo-slot where you can put either a secondary SIM card or a microSD card. The biggest feature according to Umidigi is the in-display fingerprint reader, something that was not available at this price range until today. This also means that the Umidigi X comes with an AMOLED panel, but to get the device at sub-$250, they had to cut some corners here as well.

The screen has a 6.35″ diagonal and a waterdrop notch, which is not that bad. However, it only has an HD+ (1548*720) resolution, that translates to a pixel density of just 269ppi. If the panel is really good you won’t see such a big difference between Umidigi X and other similarly priced devices, but a FullHD screen would have made this device far more attractive, even if the price would have gone up 10 or 15$.

On the camera side, Umidigi learned a few things from their A5 Pro device and managed to create quite a neet combination. You get a main camera with a 48MP sensor, a 5MP depth-sensing one and a 120 degrees ultra-wide camera with an 8MP sensor. If the software and lenses are as good as the specs, the Umidigi X should be capable of really good photos compared to other devices with a similar price. On the front, you will have a 16MP selfie camera that benefits from the Helio P60 build-in neural chip to improve picture quality. Umidigi X has NFC that supports mobile payments, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi and dual-4G connectivity. It runs Android Pie out of the box.

The device will be sold for $249, however, Umidigi will be holding sale events soon where the price will drop to $199-$229 (final price not yet announced for sale event). Also, the first 1000 people that order the device will receive the UPods true wireless earphones for free.
