The Best Rugged Smartphones – October 2019

If you are looking for a rugged smartphone then you should definitely read this. Rugged devices are a must-have for anyone that works in hazardous places like construction sites or foresting or if they simply want something more rigid and durable compared to standard smartphones on the market. Usually, these devices don’t impress spec-wise at all, but if you can live with a mid-range device, even a high mid-range, there are plenty of options out there and today we are going to look at the top 5 rugged smartphones for this month.

5. Ulefone Armor 5S

There are many options if you are looking for a rather cheap rugged smartphone that can still be used without any lag or performance problems for most parts. It was rather hard for me to choose one to be placed last while discarding the rest, but in the end, design won. Most rugged smartphones have a bulky look-and-feel and you can clearly see the category of the smartphone at first glance. The Ulefone Armor 5S tries to make it look a bit more like a conventional smartphone. It is still a rugged device with IP68 and IP69K certification, but it is a bit more elegant compared to other smartphones on the list.

It is cheaper than other devices here as well, at just under $200, but it does come with an older Helio P23 chipset and only 4GB of RAM. The 64GB internal storage can be expanded with a microSD card, in which case you can only use one SIM card. The 5.85″ screen has only HD+ resolution, but the phone has complete connectivity options, including NFC, USB Type-C and wireless charging. The 5000mAh battery can also support fast charging. You can buy Ulefone Armor 5S Rugged Smartphone from their Aleixpress store.

4. Blackview BV9500 Plus

I will place this smartphone on 4th place because it is not powerful or won’t be resistant enough, but simply because for the past few months even rugged smartphones started to have decent cameras and the Blackview BV9500 Plus still has only a “normal” 16MP one. Otherwise, you are in for quite a treat with this rugged smartphone. It comes with the Helio P70 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The phone has a more traditional look, with bezels on top and bottom of the screen, and rugged margins composed of metal and rubber that will add to its durability.

This is also a device for anyone that wants a long battery life. The Blackview BV5500 Plus has a 1000mAh battery inside that can recharge completely in just under three hours. Furthermore, it supports Qi wireless charging. The smartphone has IP68 and IP69K rating for water and dust resistance. Everything else is pretty much standard. The 5.7″ screen has FullHD+ resolution, it comes with dual SIM slots, 4G connectivity, and even has NFC.

3. Doogee S90 Pro

We are starting to enter territory that has more interesting devices and the Doogee S90 Pro ticks many boxes. It comes with the Helio P70 chipset paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. the 6.18″ screen has FullHD+ resolution and a notch on top. Doogee S90 Pro comes with IP68 and IP69K rating, full connectivity options including NFC and wireless charging and a dual 16MP+8MP camera setup on the back. So far it looks to be a mid-range smartphone with nothing special, however, Doogee managed to make a modular phone that can have its functionality extended.

On the back of the device, Doogee included a custom magnetic connector that works similar to the MotoMods found on some Motorola devices. You can then attach those mods to expand the functionality of your Doogee S90 Pro. There is a game controller mod, a night camera mod, a walkie-talkie one and a battery that gives you an extra 3500mAh. The device itself will set you back $299, but you can get it along with all the mods, a carrying case for them and a wireless charger for $489. You can get it from Doggess Official Online Store.

2. Ulefone Armor 7

Things are getting interesting with the Ulefone Armor 7. This rugged smartphone comes packed with cool tech, has great performance thanks to the Helio P90 chipset and looks cool at the same time. It has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage and on the back you will find a triple-camera setup that has a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens camera and a 16MP camera that promises better photos during night time. There is also a heart rate sensor next to the cameras and LED flash.

The 6.3″ screen has a small waterdrop notch on top and FullHD+ resolution. Just like all the phones on this list, the Ulefone Armor 7 has great connectivity, with a dual 4G SIM slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC. It also has Qi wireless charging. The design is clean, with rubber corners and a metal frame for added durability. It will be available for purchase starting next month for around $400. A bit expensive, but you do get a really powerful rugged smartphone that is hard to beat in terms of performance and durability at the same time. For now, Banggood has it for pre-order, but the price is a bit more expensive than the official one.

1. Doogee S95 Pro

We finally reached our top spot for the best rugged smartphones available right now and I believe that first place should go to the Doogee S95 Pro. It is almost identical to the Ulefone Armor 7 when it comes to specifications, having the same Helio P90 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, but the design is slightly better (a least from my point of view) and just like the S90 Pro, it accepts external mods that enhance the device. Sadly, the mods are not compatible between the two devices and right now there are only two available, an external battery and a Hi-Fi speaker, but Doogee promised to launch more in the near future.

On the back you will get a triple-camera setup with a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens camera and an 8MP super-depth camera. The phone has rubberized corners, a metal frame and IP68 certification. The 6.3″ FullHD+ screen has Gorilla Glass 4 protection and a small waterdrop notch on top that holds the 16MP front-facing camera. The device is usually sold for $399, but you can get an extra $30 OFF using our coupon code from below. Also, you can get the phone plus the two modules for just $499 and you will get a free pair of truly wireless earbuds. You can order it on Doogee’s Store.
