It is no secret that 5G is going to take off in 2020. More and more smartphones will launch with 5G connectivity and even though it won’t be the year that this new tech will surpass 4G, it will be the year that we will truly see smartphones with 5G options widely available. Mediatek, obviously, want’s a piece of the cake and that is why it unveiled a new series of 5G-ready chipsets that will reach mid to high-mid range smartphones.
The Dimensity 800 Series integrates MediaTek’s 5G modem with support for both Europe, Asia, and North America networks. The integrated 5G modem promises low power consumption, fallback to 4G whenever 5G is not needed or in range and offers both data and voice over 5G. The included 5G modem is not the only thing that Mediatek can brag about with the Dimensity 800 chipset. The CPU includes four big Arm Cortex-A76 cores operating up to 2GHz and four smaller, more energy-efficient, Arm Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 2GHz. On the GPU side, it uses the same 4-core GPU present on the Dimensity 1000 chipset with Mediatek’s HyperEngine gaming technology.
The Dimensity 800 chipset also includes the third generation of Mediatek’s AI processing unit that can speed AI functions directly from hardware, especially image processing. This is good news considering that the chipset will support cameras up to 64MP and multi-camera arrays. Smartphones equipped with Mediatek’s new chipset will support FullHD+ screens with up to 90Hz refresh rate. Interesting times are ahead it seems. First devices equipped with the new Dimensity 800 CPU will be available later this year.
