Realme wants to make sure that people are talking about their brand and smartphones from their portfolio. This is part of their strategy on reaching the number 1 smartphone seller in India, and also achieving great results in other countries. That is why today marks the very first smartphone release for 2020 for Realme. They unveiled a new budget smartphone that, despite having a really low price tag, does come with a few cool specs. They did make a few compromises here and there, but the phone will still be appealing for many.
The Realmi 5i comes with a 6.5″ HD+ screen with a waterdrop notch on top and an 89% screen-to-body ratio. Not the biggest we’ve seen, but good for a low-budget smartphone. The 1600×720 resolution may be a dealbreaker for some, especially considering the size of the display, but for many people that are looking for a cheap device, it will be good enough. The phone also has dual 4G SIm slots and a third microSD card slot that can expand the storage up to an extra 256GB. Many people, however, will do just fine with the 64GB of internal storage.
Performance-wise, the Realmy 5i is quite good even for a mid-range smartphone. It is powered by the Snapdragon 665 AIE chipset and is paired with 4GB of RAM. The 5000mAh battery has support for quick-charge using up to 10W. Sadly, it uses the older microUSB connector and not the newer USB Type-C. The cameras here are a mixed bag. The phone has 4 cameras on the back with a 12MP main sensor capable of filming 4K@30fps. There is an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP portrait one and another 2MP macro camera. I would have liked to see slightly better sensors, even if it meant having only a dual or triple camera setup, especially since few people need a macro lens.
The Realme 5i comes with ColorOS 6, which is based on Android 9, has all the essential connectivity options like GPS, Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi and even a fingerprint reader on the back. The device will be sold in India for 8.999 rupies, which translated to approximately $126. No word yet on availability in other regions.
