We covered the Black Shark 3 quite a lot in the past few days and some may have forgotten that there is another gaming smartphone just up ahead: the Nubia Red Magic 5G. Thanks to GameBench, we have our first look at the phone as well as key specifications. The phone looks to be a big improvement over the previous Red Magic gaming phones launched, not only for performance but connectivity and features as well.
GameBench had a prototype unit that they put under rigorous testing. The phone will have a 144Hz refresh rate screen, the highest on the market. This probably means that it won’t be an AMOLED display like we’ve been used to from previous generation devices, but the high refresh rate may be worth it for gaming. Obviously, it will use the most powerful chipset available right now, the Snapdragon 865, and it will be paired with up to 16GB of RAM. Other key specs include UFS 3 storage and the live image from below confirms the presence of three cameras on the back.
The prototype that GameBench had in testing was equipped with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, had the active cooling from the Red Magic 3 and 3s, and was powered by a 5000mAh battery. They managed to get 5 hours of continuous playtime at a stable 144fps, something that is quite hard to achieve on a smartphone. We don’t have any information related to the cameras since GameBench was only focusing on gaming performance.
The design of the phone is completely different than the previous Red Magic phones. They went for a new design language with it but it still looks like you would expect a gaming smartphone to look. It has an aggressive “X” on the back and the metal case is painted with a red and blue gradient. We can see the proprietary connector for the dock that was introduced last year. There is also a “Red Magic” LED logo that lights up and the wents for the active cooling system are easily visible on the side, next to the red “Game Mode” switch.
