Red Magic has revealed their next gaming smartphone, the Red Magic 5G, in China a few days ago and the global launch is just around the corners, with chipping starting next month. Now is a good time to look over the phone’s specifications and what it has to offer. The Red Magic 5G may be the best gaming smartphone currently on the market, even though some aspects may be overkill at this time. At least you will get bragging rights with it. Also, read until the end to learn how you can win one!
Like any flagship smartphone launched in the first half of 2020, the Red Magic 5G features the Snapdragon 865 chipset, the most powerful mobile chip currently available. It is paired with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS3.0 storage. The phone will have some of the best performance on the market and it will be hard to top it for quite a while. In initial reviews, it was capable to sustain 144 fps in many popular mobile games like Real Racing 3 and Arena of Valor, and 90fps in PUBG mobile, all games running on “Ultra” settings.
All this performance will generate quite a bit of heat, however, Red Magic included their active cooling system that they introduced last year but made it even better. The heat pipe that covers the components has a bigger surface and extends from one ventilation hole to the other to allow better airflow. The fan also sees improvements and can now spin up to 16000 times per minute and between the liquid cooling chamber and the copper plates, there are multiple layers of graphite that further dissipate heat. This may be the most advanced cooling system present on a phone to date.
The Red Magic 5G has another world’s first feature, a 144Hz AMOLED display. Samsung has 120Hz on its S20 lineup and OnePlus has eased the same for the OnePlus 8 pro, by none can compete in terms of refresh rate to Red Magic’s phone. You only get FullHD+ resolution (1080 x 2340), but it should be enough in most cases, especially on the notch-less 6.65″ screen. The phone also has 240Hz touch sampling rate, not as fast as Black Shark 3’s, but still way above most other smartphones on the market.
The cameras on the Red Magic 5G see some improvements, but don’t expect it to compete with phones that focus on photography. The device has a primary 64MP sensor from Sony (IMX686), an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. Sadly there is no telephoto lens camera, so you don’t get an optical zoom on the phone. The front of the device holds a 12MP selfie camera and the under-display fingerprint reader. Everything is powered by a 4500mAh battery that supports fast-charging up to 55W.
Being a gaming phone, the Red Magic 5G comes with quite a few interesting game-centric features. I already mentioned the 240Hz touch sampling rate, but you also get two side touch buttons that have a 300Hz touch sampling and can be mapped in-game actions. These are similar to the Black Sharl 3’s shoulder buttons but are capacitive instead of push-buttons. The earpiece also acts as a speaker to offer better 3D sound and the headphone jack is present. The Red Magic 5G also has a gaming port that will let it connect to the docking station that Red Magic is selling, and a game-boost switch that will close background applications and will help in-game performance. The back of the phone has the RED MAGIC logo with RGB LED lights that can be programmed with different effects from the phone’s built-in software.
Finally, let’s talk about connectivity. As the name suggests, the phone has 5G capabilities and it comes with a dual-SIM slot. There is also Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac/ax, GPS and this time the company also included NFC. The device will be available in three colors, Gradient, Red and Black and pricing will start at around 500 Euros next month in Europe, North America as well as other parts of the world (Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, Macao).
In the meantime, Red Magic is holding a contest where you could win the phone, a power bank, a pair of headphones or vouchers to purchase the new device when launched. You can register for the contest by following this link.
