Today we saw the international launch of the Black Shark 3 and the company is now accepting pre-orders for their latest gaming smartphone in the EU. The new interaction of the device comes with better hardware, enhanced cooling and a high refresh-rate screen, a feature that was absent from last year’s smartphones. Still, the device has some serious competition from Red Magic. The Black Shark 3 Pro was also released, but pricing and availability were yet to be announced.
Before we go into pricing for the Black Shark 3, let us look over the specifications. It is powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 CPU and comes with 8GB LPDDR4X or 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS3.0 storage. The 6.67″ AMOLED screen has a 90Hz refresh rate and a 270Hz touch sampling rate that should help during gaming. Furthermore, Black Shark enhanced the cooling system and, even though you don’t get a speeding fan inside the phone, the liquid cooling mechanism and the positioning of the PCB between two cooper plates and a thermal graphite sheet should allow the phone to keep top clock speeds for longer periods.
The device also has a 4720mAh Dual Battery that can be charged with up to 65W. This means that the phone can be fully recharged in about 38 minutes. Furthermore, Black shark added a new magnetic connector on the back of the phone which should allow you to continue playing while charging the device. Speaking of connectors, we see the return of the 3.5mm audio jack, a feature that was highly requested but missing from the Black Shark 2 and 2 Pro.
On the camera side, the Black Shark 3 sees some improvements as well compared to the previous generation. You get a triple-camera setup with a 64MP main shooter, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP camera used for bokeh effects. Sadly there is no telephoto lens camera. Still, the company promises improved image quality thanks to better software and AI capabilities build into JoyUI 11. Don’t expect the phone to compete with camera-centric phones on the market, but should be decent enough for most scenarios.
Now, let’s talk about pricing. The Black Shark 3 is currently being sold for €599 for the 8GB+128GB version or €729 for the 12GB+256GB model. This is indeed a price increase compared to last year’s phones, but we do get better hardware and an overall improved device. The first 100 people to pre-order the device will get the magnetic charging cable for free, but the pre-order bonus does seem a bit underwhelming, especially considering that last year the company offered the pro-kid controllers.
